FIRST® LEGO®
League Challenge (FLL)
Grades 4–8, ages 9–16

In the LEGO® League Challenge, teams earn points in three major categories:

  1. Team Culture – Teams earn points based on how well they work together and assist competitor teams!
  2. Innovation Project – Meet and interview real world experts from your community on a given topic, identify a real-world problem you want to solve, and then as a team, come up with an innovative solution.
  3. Robot Design – design a robot from scratch using LEGO® parts in order to complete the challenges. Earn points for an innovative robot design and for completing the challenges. Not only do the kids learn about problem solving, but they will also be introduced to the basics of coding and computer programming.

Students learn many skills including: programming using SPIKE Prime software, mechanical design, critical thinking, problem identification, problem solving, working in a team environment, project management, presentation skills, and marketing.

Each team typically has 6-8 students. As more students want to join, we simply add more teams.

Season Duration: runs from the end of August through December/January. But during the off-season is a great time to come out and try a challenge or two to determine if you want to join a formal team next season.

Meeting Times: During the off-season we meet every Sunday from 3-5pm. During the competition season, we typically meet twice a week. Days and times vary based on
student and volunteer availability.

FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC)
Grades 7–12, ages 12–18

In FIRST® Tech Challenge, the program becomes increasing technical as students learn how to design a robot, fabricate parts, project manage and, of course, computer programming and coding in a variety of coding languages.

At this level students can specialize and choose which aspects of the robot building they want to focus on. Some members of the team might just focus on marketing and building the team website. Others will focus on coding, others will focus on design and even building the robot out in CAD, and still others will focus on actual construction. Students get the opportunity to focus in on the skills and aspects of robot building that they want to master.

Each team typically has 5 - 12 students. As more students want to join, we simply add more teams.

Season Duration: runs from September to March. But during the off-season is a great time to come out and try a challenge or two to determine if you want to join a formal team next season.

Meeting Times: During the off-season we meet every Sunday 3-5pm. During the competition season, we
often meet 3 days a week for 2 hours each based on student availability.
